Monday morning, you open Seller Central and last week's sales line has dipped. Not a little. The first instinct is almost always the same: "It's the algorithm", "It's seasonality", "It's the competition". Sometimes that's true. Far more often, when Amazon sales drop suddenly, there's a specific, checkable cause sitting in one of six places. The catch is that checking all six by hand means five different reports and the best part of an hour. Here's the order to check them in, and the questions to ask your AI to get there in five minutes.

Why a sales drop is hard to read

Revenue compresses too many things into one number. Broken down, it's simple:

When the total falls, usually only one of these levers has moved, and usually on a handful of SKUs. Mistake number one is staring at the seller account total instead of asking: "Which products lost the most, and what changed on those products?" Mistake number two is starting from the vaguest hypothesis (the algorithm) instead of the most concrete ones (stock and Buy Box).

Why Amazon sales drop: the 6 most common causes, in order

Order matters. Start with what you can verify in seconds and that explains sharp drops; finish with what needs more analysis.

1. Stockouts or FBA inventory running low

If a strong seller ran out of stock, the drop is immediate and total. Watch out for inbound inventory that isn't yet available: on paper you have units, in practice you're not selling. This is the most common cause and the easiest to find.

2. Lost Buy Box

Without the Buy Box, most purchases go to another seller even though your listing is live. Typical triggers: your price is no longer competitive, another offer ships faster, or your performance metrics slipped. Check it ASIN by ASIN, comparing your price with the Buy Box price.

3. Suppressed, inactive or flagged listings

A listing can disappear from search because of a missing attribute, a non-compliant image or a compliance issue. The product is in stock, the price is right, but nobody finds it. Read the issues flagged on the listing, not just its status.

4. Ad campaigns paused or capped by budget

If part of your traffic comes from Sponsored Products, a paused campaign or a budget that runs out by early afternoon removes visits and sales. Compare ad spend, clicks and orders this week against last week.

5. Falling organic traffic

If stock, Buy Box, listings and ads are all fine but sessions are down, the problem is upstream: ranking, seasonality, a competitor pushing harder. You need history here, to tell a new drop from a recurring pattern.

6. Falling conversion

Same traffic, fewer orders. Usually there's a price change (yours or a competitor's), a new negative review, or an edited image or title. It comes last because it's the hardest to attribute with certainty.

Run the check in 5 minutes with AI

Doing these six checks manually means opening the sales report, FBA inventory, Buy Box data, listing status and the Ads console, then stitching them together in a spreadsheet. With your seller account connected to ChatGPT or Claude through an MCP connector, you ask the same questions in plain English and the model cross-references the data for you. Vendooly also includes a dedicated sales-drop diagnosis tool that bundles these checks.

Copy these prompts in order:

Compare sales for the last 7 days with the previous 7 days on amazon.com. Show me the 10 SKUs that lost the most revenue and how much each contributes to the total drop.
For those 10 SKUs, check current FBA stock, Buy Box status (mine or lost, with the Buy Box price), listing status and flagged issues. Give me a table with a "likely cause" column.
For the same SKUs, compare ad spend, clicks and orders this week versus last week. Flag any campaigns that are paused or out of budget.
Look at the available history for these SKUs. Is this week's drop unusual, or have we seen it at the same time before?

None of these prompts changes anything; they're all read-only. Understand first, act second.

What to do once you've found the cause

Every cause has its own fix, and most can be prepared right in the chat:

With Vendooly, every write (price, stock, listing, bid, budget) shows a preview and runs only after your explicit confirmation. The AI prepares, you approve.

Don't wait until Monday to notice

The real cost of a sales drop isn't the cause; it's the time it takes you to spot it. That's why Vendooly's Monday recap emails you last 7 days vs the previous 7, Buy Boxes won and lost, products that went out of stock while selling, and your two declining SKUs, along with prompts to dig deeper with your AI.
